Spelling, Cookies and the State

This week has not been the best.

First off, I get a letter from my daughter's dentist that they will no longer accept the State of Illinois Dental insurance due to lack of payment by the state.

When I called the insurance company, they said that from bill to payment is about 170 days+ right now.

Second, Girl Scout Cookie sales for my troop are down by more than 50%. Part of the problem is the economy.

The other problem is they moved the cookie sales from Jan-Feb to Oct-Nov. Why I don't know. So we are competing against every other school fundraiser. Also everyone is trying to buy for the holidays.

They also raised the price to$4 a box. We had a Cookie Booth yesterday at a very busy gas station. We sold 100 boxes in 4 hours. Last year we sold almost 3 times that amount at the same location. 85% of our customers complained about the price.

And the last problem with the G.S. Cookies is Wal-Mart is selling knock off Thin Mints and Tagalongs for $2.38.

The third thing that happened this week and the worst is I learned how to spell a new word this week............Leukemia! My mother was diagnosed with this yesterday. She is suppose to start chemo before Christmas.

  1. Oh Janet. I am so very, very sorry. What a horrid week!!! You know I pray for your sweetie's teeth, well and all of you. What rotten news to get.
Ahnalin had about $6,000 of dental work that was paid for by the state of CA right before the budget was voted on. They covered it all. But then, after the vote, we got a letter stating that the dental would now be capped at $1500.00 per child. Lovely. And our monthly premiums went way up too! For state coverage! Oh well, I am glad for the coverage anyway. It is more than hubby and I have.
I am so very sorry about your mama too. Oh sweetie, you will all continue to be in my prayers.
Big hugs from your smocking friend, Sivje

  2. oh Janet I am so sorry. I will add your mother to my prayers. How scary for all of you.

And #3,987 why I hate Wal-Mart and won't shop there. It is bad enough that they are driving out local mom and pop businesses but when they target the GS that is just LOW!

  3. Thank you Martha, A 50% cut in sales really hurt when the girls only get 75 cents a box.

  4. Sivje, I knew you would understand about the dentist. She has been with this dentist since she was 2 years old. When you are dealing with prenatal malnutrition and 10 month of a powered milk and sugar water formula it plays havoc on these little girls teeth.

  5. My heart goes out to you, Janet, with the awful week you've had! I remember exactly all the details of the day my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She lived almost 7 very full years after that. You've had an awful week, Hon. {{HUGS}}

  6. Oh Janet, I'm so sorry about your mom. Hopefully it was caught early and the chemo will take care of it. I hope she doesn't get sick from the treatments. I'll be praying for her and you.
GS cookies should not be $4 a box and should not be sold this time of the year. But, people should buy them anyway to help out this wonderful organization. I was a scout and sold cookies for .50 in the dark ages. My girls were scouts and I think they were $1.50 then. I was a leader when they went up to $2.00. I bought them from my students when they went up to $3.00!
I saw some knockoffs at the Dollar General Store about a year ago for like $1.00 or so a box. That should be illegal!!!
The state won't pay up on their bills. Things are getting bad. We need to have some legislature to prevent this sort of thing!!! It's criminal!

  7. Your mother and all of your family will be in my prayers. The day I learned of my mother's cancer is etched in my mind. It was the beginning of some of our most cherished and joyful days. Amazing how that works! May you and your mother find joy in the midst of her treatments and road to renewed health.
So sorry about the dental and cookie woes. One more reason to add to my last for not shopping at WalMart!
