First Birthday

Today is my granddaughter's first birthday! Wow, time has flown by!

Instead of my desire to make a frothy 1st Birthday dress, I toned it down to something she would really wear more then once.

This is a size 1 Children's Corner Mary Dee. The fabric has been in my stash for years waiting for the perfect "Let's Party" dress. The dress is piped in royal blue. I love this pattern and have used it numerous times.

Here is the back view. I used slightly larger buttons ( This is based on my experience of getting this style of dress off my daughter when she was one). The yoke of the dress has been lengthened by 1/2 inch to accommodate a long torso granddaughter.

She wore her balloon dress to open presents and play. She then had a costume change before she got to eat/wear her cake! :-)

Happy Birthday Cupcake!

  3. I love that idea! It's so bright and cheery. She is adorable eating her cake!
I made my Shelby's first b-day dress out of Bubble Burst dots, and it was so cute. I had a lot of the same colors.

  4. I love the dress. I have made the Mary Dee so many times, I think that I could make it in my sleep. Yes, the larger buttons really do work better and actually balance the wrap better.

  7. Cynthia, FYI.....if you make up the Mary Dee pattern don't follow the instructions. They are just WONKY!

  8. Very cute dress. I remember making Mary Dee several times for my own daughters when they were young. It's a great pattern, despite the wonky directions!

  9. HELP! (I love reading your blog, and I'm getting lots of great ideas.) I just completed a dedication gown for my new granddaughter, but I made the mistake (?) of not asking my son and daughter-in-law's preferences before I did it. They don't like the fact that it is typically extremely long (heirloom length), and want to know if I can cut it off. I'm having a really hard time with that idea, just because I know all the work that went into it (starting with the fact that I bought 5 lengths of fabric before I found the one that I wanted). The bodice is smocked----I did at least 3 of those before I was satisfied with the fabric and the smocking! I stitched my granddaughter's name in the hem, did little tucks in the slip near the hem----so do I save this gown for another (hopefully) granddaughter someday (I have another son), or do I shorten it?? Any thoughts?
